Tips for Traveling Long Distances with Your Kitty
If you plan on traveling long distances with your cat, you’ll need to prepare for your trip in advance. Depending on the mode of transportation you’ll be taking, you may be limited on how much you can pack. That’s why it’s important to know what types of businesses are in the area you’re traveling to sell cat supplies. If you’re taking a vehicle on the road, you can load it up with everything you need in anticipation of the trip.
Here are some tips that help you prepare to travel long distances with your kitty:
Invest in a good carrier. Make sure that your cat can sit and lay comfortably in it. If it’s one that you’ll have to carry through an airport, you’ll appreciate having good handles to hang onto. You may even invest in a soft side carrier that looks like a duffel bag with air vents. You’ll have no problem carrying your cat from terminal to terminal or bringing him or her inside with you when you check into the hotel. Like you, your cat likely has some travel anxiety. Although it may be exciting for him or her to go to a new place, it’s very important for you to do everything you can to make the trip as smooth as possible for your feline.
Pack your pet’s essentials. What does your cat need to survive a trip away from home? Does he or she sleep in a bed? Do you have a new litter box that you can carry with you to your destination? How about the food your cat eats, the meds he or she takes, and toys? Akin to packing a diaper bag, it’s important to make sure you have what your pet needs so you don’t have to buy everything when you get to your destination.
See the vet before you go. Even if the trip is a short one, schedule a time to see the veterinarian prior to leaving. You’ll want to make sure that your cat is healthy enough to travel. If he or she is experiencing any type of illness or injury, you’ll want to know. Once your pet is cleared to travel, you’ll be ready to go. Pack the paperwork from the vet along with emergency numbers for reaching the animal
doctor in a bag with your other important travel documents.
Prepare your cat for the journey. Take short trips in the car while your cat is in the carrier. Leave it out in the open in your living room so your kitty is comfortable getting inside of it. Then, make it a point to drive with the carrier inside the car. If you plan to travel by car to your destination, gradually increase the amount of time you spend driving your cat around before the actual trip.
Travel longer distances with your kitty with ease. The tips listed above help you take the guess work out of traveling with a pet. As always, err on the side of caution by being too prepared rather than under prepared. You’ll want to make sure your cat is comfortable being on the road, too.
