Post-Surgical Skin Care Tips for Your Beloved Pet
Cats require surgery for different reasons. It could be due to accident or illness. It could be that you chose to spay or neuter your feline. No matter what the reason, you’re going to need to give your pet some extra love and care in the weeks following his or her surgery.
Here are some post-surgical skin care tips that you can use to keep your cat happy and healthy:
Keep your pet indoors. You may need to keep your cat in a small room or crate if you have to leave throughout the day. This will prevent them from moving too much and irritating the surgical area.
Don’t give him or her too much water. It can cause nausea in your cat. Listen to the vet’s recommendation and be mindful about how much water you give your pet access to while he or she heals. Put away the self-watering bowls and opt for smaller dishes when watering your kitty until he or she is fully healed.
Don’t pet, brush, groom or bathe your cat where the stitches are. This can cause the area to become irritated and cause infection. Try to keep your hands off of any area with stitches or where a needle or microchip was inserted. If you have to touch that area, make sure you put on surgical gloves before applying any cream or balm.
Prevent your pet from licking or biting at the stitches. A pet cone may be provided to you by the vet. If it isn’t, you can purchase one inexpensively online or through a pet supply store in your city. Make sure to put it on your cat if you see him or her messing with the surgical area.
Take note of any changes in the surgical area. Is it bleeding or leaking? Is their swelling, bruising or an unpleasant smell coming from the surgical area? Do you see discharge or increased redness? These are all things to cause alarm. Seek additional medical help for your cat if you notice these problems following a procedure.
Give them extra time and attention. It may be hard to devote full days of care to your pet if you work or have other personal obligations. With that said, don’t forget that your cat has gone through some trauma and needs time to feel safe again. Block areas where your pet is known to hide and make sure to lay on the TLC extra thick until your kitty starts to feel better. They’ll respond in purrs and head nudges.
Taking good care of the surgical area by keeping it clean and dressed will help your kitty heal faster. Make sure to follow the veterinarian’s directions and to give your pet reassurance that everything is going to be okay. You can also use a product like Corigem Balm or Spray to treat dermatological conditions and alleviate itching.
You’ll find both items for sale on the Easyology Pets website. Follow product instructions when treating your cat’s skin. The antiseptic and antifungal properties of the product soothe and prevent infection from causing bigger problems for your pet.
