Do You Know the Top 3 Pet Allergy Triggers?

Achoo! Achoo!

If you keep hearing your pets sneeze or if you see them scratching like crazy when your house is closed and well cleaned, then they might be suffering from allergies.

Top 3 Causes of Pet Allergy

Common Symptoms of Pet Allergies

Yes, just like humans, our furry friends can also get allergies from certain things. Although varying in severity, you will find an allergic dog or cat exhibiting the following symptoms:

  •         Sneezing, wheezing, and coughing

  •         Vomiting and diarrhea

  •         Itchy, red, or scabbed skin

  •         Swollen paw, paw chewing, and constant licking

  •         Itchy eyes, ears, back, and base of tail

What Causes Allergies in Pets?

Allergies don’t sprout out of nowhere. Even mushrooms have spores that allow them to travel far and grow in unexpected places. You might think your house and furniture are sparkly clean, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing in them that can trigger allergic reactions in your pet.

There are probably tens or maybe hundreds of things that produce pet allergies, but these three are the most common culprits:

Pets Are Sensitive to Perfumes and Cleaning Agents

Perfume and Cleaning Products

Dogs’ and cats’ sense of smell is acutely stronger than a human’s. While we have a humble 5 million olfactory receptors, cats have up to a stunning 80 million while dogs reach up to a staggering 300 million.

That is why they are highly sensitive to scents that we barely notice or are even fond of.

That fragrant perfume you spray every morning or that citrus bleach that you always use to wash clothes and scrub tiles may seem like novel scents. Contrary, your furry buddies may simply deem them as pungent odors and substances that irritate their noses and skin upon contact.

When choosing cologne or cleaning agents, it’s best to go for ones with a subtle smell or are labeled as pet friendly.

Your Pet May Be Allergic to Certain Medicines

Flea Products and Prescription Drugs

Tricky is what these pet allergens are.

Pets generally get red swollen marks from fleas and ticks, and our first instinct is to apply gels or sprays to soothe the wounds and kill the pesky bugs. Similarly, we tend to provide usually prescriptions to our pets when we notice symptoms we have previously encountered.

The problem with the above scenarios is that not all of us are aware of what chemicals may pose a threat to our furry friends’ health.

For this reason, it’s always a good idea to always discuss your observations and treatment options with your veterinarian to avoid unwanted side effects.

Are You Sure Your Pet Isn't Allergic to the Food You're Giving Him?

Food

This is perhaps the hardest to pinpoint as we generally provide our pets with a variety of kibbles, canned goods, and awesome treats. Typically, pet allergies result from food that their bodies are finding difficult to break down, consequently identifying them as irritants. These includes common pet food ingredients like dairy products, eggs, beef, wheat, and corn.

Since pet food allergy displays symptoms commonly seen in other illnesses, the best way to treat it is to look into each symptom, carefully identifying their causes and treating them individually. Once other diseases are either ruled out or attended to, you will be able to determine the actual food allergen and avoid feeding it to your pet.

Our pets are our family. So just like you’re careful and picky when it comes to the food you eat and the things you use, you should also be wary of the products you use for and around your furry buddies.
